After receiving numerous inquiries for details on the events that happened late Saturday night/Sunday morning in the Broadlands, our NH Watch deputies pointed me to Kraig Troxell, Public Information Office for the Sheriff's department. I had heard about 4 different versions of the story, each getting better each time it was told, so I figured it was time to get some facts and let all of you know those.

Kraig called me back immediately, and gave me all the information he could gather on the subject.

Indeed there was a report of people trying to steal a BMW car on Vestals Gap Road about 3:00 AM Sunday morning. KUDOS to whoever called this in!!! The Sheriff's office responded and actually apprehended the youths responsible. Two 17 year olds were charged with the crime. They were juveniles so were turned over to their parents, and will be petitioned soon to appear in court. From what Mr. Troxell could gather from the report, the youths were Broadlands residents.

There were also a number of reports of destruction of property, that may have involved fireworks, that evening. The Police are currently investigating the connection between these reports and the 17 year olds apprehended for the attempted theft.

If anyone has details about these crimes that they think may be helpful, please contact the Sheriff's Department at 703-771-1021.

Lesson to be learned to help prevent these crimes in our neighborhood? Easier said then done I guess, but let's try to keep our teenagers off the streets at 3:00 AM :)

These youth's ran and were chased several blocks before being
caught. We heard someone shouting "stop, police" several times
before seeing deputies apprehend someone on our neighbors lawn.
Any 17 year old who is brazen enough to try to steal a car in
their neighborhood at 3:00 AM is completely out of control. The
fact that they are able to run the streets at that hour is a
    good indication of the cause.

I don't know who called this in but they deserve a big thanks
for their vigilance. The sheriffs also deserve thanks for a
quick response. These types of crimes often go unsolved.

When and where is the NH Watch meeting? I am interested in
    finding out more.

The next Neighborhood Watch meeting (unless it has changed) is going to be held at the nature Center on October 25 at 7:30 pm. Hope to see you there...

    FYI

My 3yr old son and I were walking back from dropping my daughter off at Hillside on Monday. We were playing catch with a super ball while walking home. My son's toss took a bounce into the pine trees along Claiborne, between Vestals Gap and Small Branch. As I was retrieving the ball, my son picked up a set of BMW keys and a removable front end to a car radio. We called the sheriff and a deputy came by and picked up the items but he did not seem to be aware of the Saturday incident.

I also got word first-hand that these same youths vandalized 3 cars belonging to a friend of mine. They set the inside of 2 of the cars on fire and removed the front panel off another one of their vehicles in what can only be figured as an attempt to steal it. Folks, don't get to comfortable and leave your cars unlocked...

hopefully they do not get away with just a slap on their wrist. You know their parents probably won't do anything if they were letting their kids out at all hours of the night.
