My Goodman AC unit fan would not spin when I started up the AC yesterday. The unit heated up and the freon pump was working but no fan. I called a bunch of HVAC companies but they were all to busy and could not make it out yesterday but when I told Ed O'toole(Forum recommended HVAC guy 703-771-9481) about the problem he suggested a change the transformer. I watched several how to videos on youtube.com and then ran out to Tribles parts in Sterling. Came home and installed it in 20 minutes. It was very easy. Not much harder than cleaning the furnace filter.

    Have Fun,

That is my point exactly! If a guy who doesn't even know a transformer from a capacitor can do it, anyone can!!!

Great to hear as the labor for a 30 minute HVAC job cost me $300 (they had set prices and don't charge hourly) and the parts were replaced for free under the warranty!

Great to hear that you did your homework and fixed it your self. I had the same issue last year during the peak summer days and we could not stay in the house any longer. So called a contractor who was recommened on this forum. He charged me $280. Never gave me an estimate. Just handed me the invoice after spending 15 minutes outside.
I was desparate to get it fixed as we have small kids and did not research about the problem. This contractor was reasonable on a water heater service earlier and gained my trust. But he got me with the AC repair :(

Last week I called a plumbing company, also recommended here, to get an estimate for replacement of a sump pump along with a backup pump installation. They said the contractor would have to look at it to give an estimate. I set up an appointment with them and guess what?? he handed me a trip charge invoice for $80 before giving an estimate close to $1500.

Please be very careful and if possible spend some time to research these problems and make sure to get an estimate before any job is performed, and check if there would be a trip charge. My 2 cents...

Had my transformer replaced yesterday as well (3rd one in 2 years)...finally got to the root of the problem...incorrect wiring of the thermostat was causing it to short out. This last time I thought there might be an electrical fire in my attic from the smell, but I went up there and it was OK.

wow, that's great. Watched a couple videos and got it done on your own. My AC fan just recently started creating a problem for me but if fixing it is as easy as fixing a furnace filter looks like I can do this, I should watch a couple of videos and see if I learn something or not.
