Broadlands recycling twice per week?

In Broadlands we get trash picked up twice per week, but recycling only once. Yet its the year 2014, and my household generates much less trash than recycling. When I asked about getting the collections reversed (to get recycling twice per week & trash once), I was told the Broadlands Board of Directors denied the request.

How do you feel about this? Am I the only Broadlands household that recycles more than they put in a landfill?

Kudos to recycling more than you throw in the garbage. Looking around the neighborhood on trash day, you are in the minority, which is likely why the Board denied the request.

Do you have room for a second recycling can (or one bigger can, if available) and therefore you can put more recycling out on the weekly pick-up day?

Our family of five can get by with trash and recycling pick up each once a week. I wonder if that's ever an option that could be used to save homeowners' money?

Do you have the large recycle bin?? I don't mind my recycling in my garage but not sure I would always wants my trash there for a week especially in the summer.

I also agree sometime I could go for a week without either but again not sure in the summer I would be a fan.

After living in CA I would definitely agree with more recycling and less trash collection. We only had trash collection 1x/week, had to pay different prices for the size of garbage can we put out, and had to pay fines if we did not recycle enough. We had no problem even with young children at that time. Most of the time here I only put out the trash can 1x/week.

Agree! This would be a great incentive to reduce waste. We practiced this in NH.

My neighbors here put out multiple bags of trash twice a week so I can see why the board denied denali's request.

Also, many folks are under the misguided perception that everything they put in the recycling bin is recycled, but it is not. The whole idea is to reduce first, reuse, and recycle as a last resort.

I would also be interested in 2x/week recycling pickup but only 1x/week for trash.

1x week of each would be fine here. Except for in July! Cause it gets smelly in the heat!

Trash 1x per week and recycling 2x per week would fit my family. We seem to generate more volume in recyclables than trash, so they pile up waiting for Thursday.

Are enough people going to separate their recyclables from their trash? Driving around, there are too many obvious examples of recyclables in trash cans as well as a lack of a recycling bin on the one day of recycling pickup.

My neighbor refuses to recycle. Nothing I can do about that.

I would not consider eliminating the second trash pick up per week. I would not consider adding a second recycle pick up until there is a significant increase in the number of residents who recycle and have upgraded to the larger recycle containers instead of the small bins.

On my street I haven't seen any of the small recycling bins in quite some time. Is there a way to accurately (as opposed to someone like me saying, "I don't see that many!") gauge the amount of recycling vs. trash? Can Patriot tell us how many pounds of each they are collecting, for example?

Unfortunately, I live by a few houses with the small bins and the bins are not good on a windy day. Today, it looks like the recycling truck exploded. Moreover, my bet is on the bin owners not collecting their recycling, which is strewn all over the block.

Ditto here. Garbage everywhere. I picked up what was near the path since the ground is so saturated.

We have been saying for a couple of years now that we'd like recycling more often. Truly, once a week would be fine for both trash and recycling. We have much more recycling (we fill the toter each week), but many weeks, we create maybe 1 bag of trash for the entire week (and we still have one in diapers.) Also, we are in a single-family, so we were given the large trash can, which takes up a lot of space in our garage. We want a small trash can, as small as our recycling toter. Does the company trade little trash toters to replace the large ones? Anyone asked or done this?

Once a week would be fine with us too.. 1 bag a week of trash is about the norm in our household too. We did trade the big 96 gallon trash can to the smaller 64 gallon trash can - but we had to pay $40 (i think) for the trade! You will need to call the trash company, and they'll deliver the small can and take the big one.
