Broadlands vs Ashburn

    Hello,
    Can someone help me understand Broadlands vs Ashburn? Because our restaurant sometimes mailed (as Broadlands) and sometimes as Ashburn?

    For the zip code 20148, the post office recognizes both 'broadlands' and 'ashburn' as valid city names.

    Basically, you can use either as long as you have the right 20148 zip code.

    It used to be less automatic checking systems had 'broadlands' as valid.. but it's better now. For most 'compatible', use 'ashburn'.. if you want your own town/city name.. use 'broadlands' :)

    Ashburn is the general term for this area, Broadlands is our specific development within Ashburn. As Steve pointed out, the zip code 20148 can mean either Ashburn or Broadlands.

    When dealing with national companies, you may discover that some use Ashburn for your address and some use Broadlands. I've had internet merchants refuse to ship packages to me because I put down my address as Ashburn and they checked the zip code and came up with Broadlands.

    Some companies use software to adjust your address. Such software is usually referred to as Address Cleansing and Consistency software. The purpose of it is correct possible errors when you type in your street name, town name, and/or state. For example, if I put down my address as "Ashburn, VI, 20148" the software should catch that 20148 refers to Virginia (VA) and not the Virgin Islands (VI), and fix the state name for me.

    Depending on which company makes the Address Cleansing and Consistency software your vendors use, 20148 maps to either Ashburn or Broadlands. About half of my monthly bills are addressed to Ashburn and the other half to Broadlands. Because both are acceptable by the US Postal Service, this situation will continue for quite some time.

    Some of Broadlands is 20147. Brambleton is also part of the 20148 zip code.

    That's right. According to the USPS, Ashburn is the preferred city for 20148, but other acceptable (i.e., approved secondary) city names are Broadlands, Brambleton, and Arcola.

    I have a post office box that is in Ashburn and is 20146. I'm just glad that didn't change when the post office moved or I would still be filling out change of address forms.......
