The 9th annual COF-A-Que Barbeque Competition and Music Festival will be held August 8, 9, and 10. This event is equal parts non-sanctioned BBQ contest, multi-band jam session, charitable concern, and huge outdoor sleepover party.

I am the captain of one of over 30 teams (!) competing in this year's event. This is the first time that our team, "Goofus and the Noobs," has ever participated in this type of thing. All members of my team are Broadlands residents, but given that we are rookies, we would really like you to come out and cheer for us.

The event starts at 5pm on Friday, August 8, and basically goes until noon on Sunday, August 10. Bands will be playing on Friday night and Saturday from 11am until midnight. The BBQ competition is on Saturday afternoon, followed by the big blow-out party that night. The location is a farm on Rt. 50 just west of Gum Spring Road. All of the details are on the web site. Yes, camping is encouraged.

[SIZE=+0]Tickets are $25 in advance ($30 at the gate) and include admission for the entire event. Kids 14 and younger are free. Please keep in mind that the proceeds benefit a non-profit organization called Hungry for Music. HFM's mission is to inspire underprivileged children (and others) by bringing positive musical and creative experiences into their lives. Since 1994 they have had a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of people through their concerts, workshops, and donations of musical instruments. It's a great and worthy cause.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Hello, everyone. It is with great pride that I announce the results of our participation at COF-A-Que 2008.

My team, Goofus and the Noobs (100% Broadlands residents), was one of 32 teams at the event. We performed exceptionally well, far exceeding any of our individual or collective expectations. We entered 7 events and placed in 5. Yes, we earned a top 3 ranking in 5 – count 'em, five – events, picking up 4 medals and 1 trophy with a cow on top. Here are the results:

    Brisket - 1st place - Frisket's Brisket
    Beef (non-brisket) - 2nd place - All-Seeing Eye of Round Roast
Pork (non-ribs) - 2nd place - *****in' Pork Butt (the name isn't so nasty as to be asterisk-worthy; it rhymes with twitchin')
    Appetizers - 3rd place - FDA-Approved Stuffed Jalapenos
Sides - 3rd place - Kickass BBQ Beans

My thanks to the other Broadlands families who attended the event and visited our cook site this past weekend. We look forward to seeing you at next year's event for the beer, bands, and barbeque!!
