FWIW - We just finished our basement and we played the roll of General Contractor. We priced out each step. In the long run we saved approx. $20K. We did have a General Contractor provide us with a quote, which helped make our decision to be our own General Contractor. The only downside is the time it took to finally finish it. We started at the end of December and moved furniture, etc. in at the end of June.

Stay away from Master Crafters. Arrogant, opportunist in my opinion.

Will you elaborate - we have been talking to Master Crafters about a kitchen remodel and they have been good to work with so far. Has anyone contracted with them?

Can anyone recommend any contractors for finishing a basement? I am looking for someone who is not only good at their job but also honest and trustworthy.

    Thanks.

Chris with Ashburn Classics Custom Builders was very good- he advertises in the Loudoun papers you get. He was excellent and very honest- very pleased with him.

We finished our basement out very recently. We used Choice Home Services as the contractor. Contact details are:

    Jim Ohlstrom
    Choice Home Services, Inc.
    Tel: 703 517 8662
    Email: choicehs@cox.net

One very minor caveat: you need to stay on Jim's case a bit about dates as his estimating of time required is not always the best. No cost impact as the estimates are "fixed firm price" rather than "time and materials", but it's a fault he seems to share with just about every contractor I've ever had to work with! :) That said, his crew were very polite, helpful and considerate throughout the job which took about 5 1/2 weeks total elapsed which included creating an egress window.

Does anyone have any recent updates for referrals for contractors/companies to finish a basement?
Walk out basement...thinking 2 rooms, full bath, recessed lighting, few closets and a storage room.

Looks like Keller & Sons is commonly highly recommended (at least in 2004)....anyone have any recent experiences with them...still good?
    Anyone else?

    Thank you!

Try Jim Ohlstrom, his details are in this post. He has finished basements for two of our friends as well as us.

    kahlua1 and others--

See my posts about Tom Hoover Contracting. His company does excellent work on siding, windows, and roofing. He is a general contractor and if he does not do Finished Basement work--he can recommend some one with good references who does that kind of work.

Be sure before any work is attempted, you are sure if the contractor will pull the permits or if you have to do the work yourself. Also, ALWAYS obtain 3 to 4 SATISFIED references from customers who use the contractor(s) before you proceed with job. Another source to check is the BBB (Better Business Bureau), be sure contractor(s) have CURRENT insurance and is FULLY bonded in case you need insurance for any thing that might go wrong on the job. Try to look personally and physically at the job the contractor has finished before signing off on the paperwork. NEVER EVER pay ahead of work not completed--pay only 1/3 of the work done and then go from there. Be sure you have every finite detail written in the contract.

Tom replaced some siding (small pieces) on our home when a storm came and blew some away recently. We did not have to file an insurance homeowners' claim because Tom guarantees his work in writing. Also, the manufacturers warranties are some thing to be aware of. For instance, we used ALCOA Premium Siding on our new home and it is guaranteed for the life of the home. Roofing is also an important aspect when looking at products. Tart Lumber in Sterling can assist with recommendations on contractors.

    Tom Hoover's phone information is:

    Office Phone # (703) 222-5575
    Cell Phone # (703) 932-4455

Any more concerns feel free to ask me. I was a sales manager in GA for GA Pacific--so I know alot about building products, etc.

Anyone have updated recommendations for basement contractors? After 8 years, it looks like we may finally do this.

It took us 8 years too :)

We are using EG&J - Corbin Nathan is the owner and Broadlands resident.
    EG&J Contracting Corbin Nathan, Owner 703-447-1678 cnathan@egandj.com

So far so good - we framed it out and then turned it over so I can't really speak to the framing side of it. We had the floors done last winter by another company, stained concrete and it came out really cool. Overall we're thrilled with the contract, the terms, the workmanship and the responsiveness. Feel free to PM me to see the work if you would like but he does have several references from the neighborhood too.

I second EG&J contracting - Corbin is great.

Corbin was very responsive and the work was very good. My husband was very pessimistic about the whole process and was very pleased, so much so he recommended Corbin to co-workers who were very pleased as well.

I know neighbors used Corbin after looking at our basement.

I can't say enough good things.

We are currently getting estimates from Moss Building and Design, Kenny Williams Construction, and Michael Nash. Are there any updates on who you all have used/recommend?

We used Moss for a project last year and they were great. I would totally recommend them. They weren't the cheapest or the most expensive, but they were fair. Jason Hampel, one of the owners, is so nice and totally listens to you.
