weird-- how about just put the actiontec in bridge mode and use your firewall as the router.. then you shouldn't have to mess with it anymore =)

That was the plan before it started working. I figured I'd leave it be until it stops working again. My concern with bridge mode is the effect that it might have on TV.

Port forwarding worked for 2 days. The Actiontec flaked out again. I have setup Actiontec in bridge mode. If that doesn't work reliably, it's back to Comcast.

Any affect on your 'TV features' using the bridge mode setup?

I'm very encouraged about the positive feedback about FIOS on this thread and I'm ready to switch!

I'm curious about the billing for FIOS. Right now with Comcast, my work will reimburse me for the cost of the internet service. I only have internet service thru Comcast so my bills are simple.
But with FIOS, I was planning on getting the triple play with TV, phone and internet. Are the bills itemized so that I'll still be able to highlight the internet service cost and get my work to pay for it?

    Thanks

No problems so far. I followed the procedure at the link below. This guy did what at first glance appears to be a circular connection. He ran CAT5 from an Actiontec switch port to the WAN port of his router, then another CAT5 from a switch port on his router to the WAN port of the Actiontec. The effect, after following his config steps, is that the Actiontec acts as a bridge to the other router and a client of that router.

The STB is served an IP address by my router's DHCP and seems to work the same as always. I'll monitor it for a few days and see.

Very cool! I might ping you when I get mine installed if I have any issues; maybe we can exchange notes.

    Thanks for posting the info!

Can you get cable cards with FIOS? What brand/model of tuners are provided? If you get their DVR, how does it compare to TiVo?

My old Series 2 TiVo just died and I'm trying to decide if I should repair it or get a new one, or just switch to FIOS and use their DVR.

    Thanks!

Wow... very interesting. I may have to try this out. The actiontec's wireless has flaked out twice on me already requiring a reboot.

Yes, you can get cable cards, and they have M cards. I got one installed for an TiVoHD. I believe there are a few comment in thread on their DVR. Since we were used to TiVo, we only lasted about a week before the wife/kids wanted TiVo back inplace of their DVR.

Why is TiVo better than a DVR? What's the difference? Just curious. We have a DVR and think it's great.

    TiVo is a DVR.

There are some major differences in how the interfaces work. We also had issues w/ the quality of their guide data. For some networks, they don't have real info for the shows, so their DVR things it's the same episode each time it airs, and won't recode it again; causing a few episodes to be missed.

The view recording in another room was one feature I was hoping would tip the scales in favor of just using their DVR and avoid buying the TiVoHD, but it seemed to drop about 50% of the time while using the feature and would only recover w/ a power cycle of the DVR box.

My two calls to support about random UI hangs w/ the box both go "just reboot the box, it should fix", which wasn't a longer term solution for us.

I've got my old router in the ActionTec's DMZ. It (the ActionTec) is losing/regaining WAN connection every 6-7 minutes for a few seconds per interval. Is anyone else seeing this?

Yes - I knew TiVo was a DVR...just didn't know what made one better than the other. We're happy with our DVR...haven't had one issue since we've had it, so I think we'll stick with it.

For those switching from cable to FIOS ::

Do you need to rent a box for every TV? With cable, you can just plug in and watch Comcast channels 2-65 or so without a box. For example, watching in the garage or a scrapbooking room, these are not daily used TVs and don't make sense to have dedicated boxes.

    thx.

FIOS requires a box for every TV. However, they do have a very basic box that is $3/month. This would allows you to get all of the channels, but doesn't have a guide. It would fit your need for your garage or scrapbooking room.

I have to say I'm not impressed with FIOS. The supplied router reboots every 4-5 minutes, killing whatever I'm doing online. This is basic stuff like surfing, file transfer and some IM programs and platforms like Google Talk and Steam. I'll call and ask them to straighten it out, but this could be a dealbreaker.

Youch, yeah that is a problem. Has to be a flaky router, mine is been rebooted I think twice since install due to the wireless failing.

Update: I called Verizon and received a replacement router the next day (!!!). Replaced the old one and the connection works perfectly. Now that I can enjoy it, I'm loving it :)
