I am trying to dig up the article but the Washington Post did a peice on the most expensive grocery stores in the DC metro Area(to include LoCo.)
From highest to lowest it went

    1.Giant
    2. Safeway
    3.Whole Foods
    4. Harris Teeter

So the teeter is not all that bad.

I know Giant used to have a rep of being expensive (even when I worked there 15 years ago) but they were prided on service and being worth it (meats, store, etc). Unfortunately the VA part of Giant isn't nearly as well managed and the store experience isn't anything like what I was used to back in Maryland.

According to a relative who works in Giant HR, they are desperately behind instaffing management in VA.

Here, Giant doesn't seem all that expensive.. but I haven't really compared scientifically.

Giant is moving to a everyday-low-price model, so, at least in theory, their non-sale prices should be going down.

but it seems they put some things on sale less...like diapers!!! i need diapers--but Giant always has a "new low price". however, someone's sale price is always cheaper---and someone always has them on sale! Even Giant's "low prices" aren't that great!

ugh. diapers. We get them at Sam's Club. A case of 200 size 3 Huggies is $34. We've also been getting stage 2 baby food there. They have a fruit pack and a vegetable pack - 18 containers in each pack - 3 different veggies & 3 different fruits for $8 something each. Not bad when all the grocery stores sell them for $1.09-$1.19 each.

Nothing can beat the everyday prices at Aldies.

Ahhhhh you never heard of the largest grocery chan in the world???? ha ha ha There are 3 down off rt one in alexandria and woodbridge. Several in Maryland but most of them are in Europe and the rest of the world.

We rarely go to trader joes anymore with wegmans here, and Dalyn going to Aldies when she visits her sisters and mom.

Most of the chains out here including the gas stations are mostly outrageous in there everyday prices.

The population at present can not support these stores and many of these new businesses at the moment. It is going to interesting to see what happens until the urban centers are built with the multi family segment.

Of course if the dots on the road system is not built soon everything is going to grind to a halt.

The biggest complaint I hear is there is not enough quality office space going in and flex spaces are gobbling up property making it harder and harder for the class A campus style office projects such as Verizon and aol to move here and the hughes bio tech center to move here.

Major complaints from many about the new flex space on Murder Dr on the corner of ashburn and waxpool. Not just from the immediate area are these complaints coming from. Some of the local restaurants and business's are staring to see these kinds of projects don't bring in the kind of business they need.

Example, how many restaurants do you see in the area where many of these are being built, especially the large area around 606 and 28 and up to aol??? None that I can see. And even larger flex spaces are being built with again low paying jobs lots of truck traffic and potential crime. These flex spaces are going to come back to haunt this county in years to come perhaps that is why they are the only kind of projects being built on Murder Dr. ;)

One place I have not mentioned in the very nice campus style offices being built in Landsdowne around the hospital and even some are on the golf course. Not great architecture or design but they are well separated from the residential component and have a nice appearance.

Should help the businesses in the poorly designed and laid out landsdowne center. I should say that center is not really that bad but could of been much much better like the Brambleton town center. Big hint parking garages hidden and landscaped and very large urban park. Brambleton town center is still a winner in this area, but there are still even much better town centers being built elsewhere around the country. Pictures and examples of them will be coming soon:)

we were at costco and they had a box of stage 2 diapers for like 30 or 35 bucks, and it had like 240 diapers in it--but i didn't think our daughter would use that many before she grew out of them. of course, i found out a few days later she was about 2lbs lighter than i thought--so we probably would've been okay. but i'd already bought a few MegaPacks at Safeway (on sale and with coupons)...so i'll hold out for stage 3 from costco.
