I noticed a typo in your post. You obviously meant "proud" instead of "ashamed."

What happened with HCA can be boiled down to this:

    1. Giant mega-corporation tries to force its will on a small community.
    2. Small community wakes up and realizes the consequences of the mega-corporation's plans despite a constant stream of mis-information from HCA cheerleaders.
    3. The energized community fights the good fight and ACTUALLY wins, as our elected county leaders tell the mega-corporation to find an appropriate site.
    4. The mega-corporation, which previously did not want to build in the Route 50 corridor for a variety of made-up reasons, decides to build there.
    5. The county is on track for another hospital, one that's not right on top of the existing one. What a perfect win-win. It's something that everyone should be proud of, so "ashamed" had to be a typo.

And most of your points apply to Inova as well.

My Top 5 list would be as follows:

    1. A growing community that does not have adequate health services continues to be underserved as the local monopoly WON

    2. A large plot of land slated for commercial use, in a horrible economy, had a financially sound solution that was passed on by a small handfull of NIMBY and now continues to be vacant

    3. A county with relatively low commercial tax revenues will have to increase taxes on residents in order to keep services on par with where they are today

    4. Local businesses in our community continue to close as revenues and expected growth do not matterialize and future investors remain concerned and hesitant as they have no confidence that traffic will increase

    5. And.... that top one is...... A community 15 minutes away from us is going to get all of the benefits that we should have.....

Your posts are good for one thing - recycling. Team HCA tried to shove all those bogus talking points down our throats for the last 5 or more years. Thankfully, calm heads and sound logic prevailed. Think how much time and frustration would have been saved if HCA had manned up in the beginning and build on Route 50 where there was general agreement on building a hospital.

Hera, while we may share the same opinions, I don't agree with the manner you are making your argument. People will take your viewpoints more seriously if you omit emotional statements like:

"Your posts are good for one thing - recycling"

"...shove all those bogus talking points down our throats "

Comments like these add nothing to the discussion other than introduce emotional responses. (and my comments are intended for other besides Hera also). They discourage logical discussion actually.

Name calling and insults are not the way to persuade people to consider your opinion.

    Just a suggestion.

I would like to give my opinons to your opinions if I may

What about the growing community on Route 50? South Riding and the community near Tall Cedars? Do they not qualify as a growing community that does not have adequate health services?

If I recall, it was not a small handful of Nimby, but the Board of Supervisors who voted against it. Yes the lot is vacent, but with Goose Crossing going up, this may change in the future. Whether the hospital would or would not be a financially sound solution is debatable.[/quote]

I saw no indications or assurances that our taxes would not go up even if the hospital was approved. Our taxes would have gone up anyway this year, in my opinion.

Local businesses are also closing due to poor business practices and lack of accurate market surveys also. We can use Goose Crossing as a test case whether new businesses will move in. If Goose Crossing fails, then your opinion may be right. It will take a while to determine this.

An interesting reversal of NIMBY. More like NIAEBY? Not in anyone elses back yard? Why is a community 15 minutes away less worthy of the benefits. I frankly don't understand the argument of "all the benefits we should have.." We would be able to use the existing hospital in Landsdown and the new hospital on route 50. We would garner all the benefits but not have any of the potential effects on the surrounding property values.

I like how you try to portray HCA as an evil giant mega corporation. Bad them...perhaps you need to boycott all of these evil giant mega corporations where you buy your products from and where millions of Americans are employed.
In my view, your posts indicate to me anti-HCA, not Anti-hospital location. Something to think about.

Not to belabor the point, one of many the factors that made (at the time) Rt 50 a less desirable location is the area that you point out accounted for <15% of all 911 medical emergency calls and than the ease of access to a Rt 50 campus. Specifically, data proved (compiled from LCSO & Vdot) that this stretch of roadway had >37 weekly major road closures.

At any rate the point is moot and in the hands of the State Health to assign or reassign HCA's COPN, as it appears Inova has abandoned their application.

Last time I will post on this......

Ozgood.....I appreciate your perspective and can accept that this is good for south riding, but I would rather have the benefits closer to home........

You have to agree that a substantial revenue generating machine (i.e. a hospital) would bring in material tax revenue for the county - at this stage there is no substitution for that revenue

When I say benefits to our community I mean:
    1. Medical care, including specialists for our children, located close to our home
    2. A commercial base that would help support the "strip malls" that are within our community
    3. Volumes of employees that will look for housing as close to work as reasonably possible
    4. A likely active participant and "funding source" for the myriad of community events that we have and would like to have...........they would be a friendly neighbor that way....
    5. A potential magnet for all kinds of medical support facilities (i.e. professional offices) that tend to populate the area around a hospital
    6. A business that would move in and permanantly stay.....

I get so caught up in this issue as I struggle frequently to find the specialists that my children need and I know this would have really helped them. And more generally I really am concerned that we will end up with some "crap" office space that will be ugly and vacant. I know this hospital would have solved those problems - all I can say is that I kick myself for not being more actively involved as I never thought such a decision would be possible.

There is no logic to what you are saying. Essentially, it seems like you are trying to say, if it makes money, then open it up here in the middle of a residential community. You know what would bring in the dough: a brothel. Do you want that as your neighbor? Why are you on the phone now to your elected officials to get laws changed to make brothels legal? It's the same thing that HCA tried to do with its special exception - change the rules to make something not otherwise permitted a possibility. Your arguments, which simply are repeated over and over and focus on revenue-generating this or that, lack a fundamental attachment to reality.

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about reading a response.

For someone who is calling another's argument detached from reality - maybe you should look at your own...

That is not the reasoning for the Special Exception at all. How many times must we correct you?

Your brothel analogy also stinks - building a hospital is not illegal nor does it require changing the law.

So.. to quote you... There is no logic to what you are saying

Now that school is back in session - your homework for the weekend is to open the county zoning ordinances. As a nice teacher, I'll even give you the link

    http://www.loudoun.gov/controls/spe...bid=310&fmpath=/1993+Zoning+Ordinance+Revised

Now do a search for 'hospital' and read how in all the land use categories hospitals are allowed (except one) they require a special exception. These uses ARE permitted (thats why you don't need to rezone the area) they just require approval.

The only land use that doesn't require special exception is the same category PD-SA District - which is 'special activity' as part of a planned development. Note, this is the same type of zoning that would allow by-right.. an AIRPORT, Zoo, Sewer Station, and all kinds of other things. As you can imagine, there isn't likely too many of these areas in the county zoned as PD-SA District.

By keeping certain uses as 'special exception' its the government's way of keeping themselves in the loop so they can control where such facilities are built.

This has nothing at all to do with 'changing the law' or even changing zoning - this is about getting approval for something that by definition is limited and requires specific approval to build.

Instead of regurgitating what people have forced upon you - try to take in information, verify, and form your own opinions based on what you have learned - rather then recycling other's thoughts. If you can't verify it or be substantially convinced - don't repeat it. It's your reputation on the line.

it's only interesting to banter in an intelligent manner on BOTH sides, so why bother if the one side is illogical, inflammatory and unreasonable? that's not a fun debate, so not engaging is easy enough without censorship, am i right? what's the quote about arguing with a fool...?
