Friday night I took the wife to go see IMMORTALS @ the new Cobb theater near Leesburg. First off, the movie was great. Good big screen entertainment. If you liked 300 then you'll like Immortals. The Cobb is located at the far end of a "instant downtown" behind Wegmans on 7 @ Rivercreek Pkwy. Parking was plentiful and we enjoyed the "urban street" setting. We went to Cobb instead of Brambleton in part because Regal showtimes were sold out.

The theater itself is nicely done. Huge lobby at the top of the escalator features a cafeteria style restaurant with food trays you can take into the show. There are 3 VIP theaters that are all reserved seating. There is a full service bar where you can hang out before and after the show. The staff were attentive and helpful. The lobby overlooks the main street of the village. We didn't have dinner but popcorn was good. Next time we go we'll have dinner @ one of the restaurants we saw along Village Market blvd.

The theater was stadium style with leather seats. The best seats in the middle were all reserved for DBOX patrons. DBOX tickets are $22 (3D) and feature seats that move and rumble synchronized to events in the movie. Great for action films, a waste on chick flix. We sat in the row just behind the DBOX row and felt some of the effects. It was amusing to watch regular ticket holders attempt to sit in the reserved seats only to be evicted by DBOX ticket holders.

While I enjoyed the movie, I thought it was interesting to see what new gimmicks the movie theater industry is using to increase income from patron visits. Although the Cobb is located within walking distance of many restaurants, unlike other theaters you can get dinner and a movie in one stop. Food and alcohol are good profit items. Though I think the only thing you can eat in a dark theater is finger food. Make sure you have a tight lid on your big soda in the armrest of your DBOX seat or it'll surely spill @ the first action scene.

I also noticed that almost all local theaters were only offering the 3D version of Immortals. Again, a novel feature like the moving DBOX chairs but not necessarily worth $3-4 more. I guess I'm biased since I've built myself a nice 10' screen Bluray home theater in my basement. I even have "bass kicker" speakers to reproduce many of the same vibration effects as the DBOX chairs. The main advantage that movie theaters have is 3-4 months. That's the time it usually takes for a movie to become available on BluRay or DVD. I pretty sure theater owners know this and that's why they have introduced better food, alcohol, moving seats and 3D to try to make their big screen experience worth going out for.

First run movies are no longer a "cheap night out", we've paid less @ Wolftrap. However, seeing Immortals on 11-11-11 with the wife (who enjoys a good action flick) on a big screen made it well worth it.

Thanks... appreciate your detail and perspective, and this place sounds cool. So what was the cost of the movie ticket itself? And what are some examples of the food that you can bring in?

Been to Cobb 3 times already! So much better than Brambleton... especially since Regal's takeover. Service is much better... and what could be more awesome than taking alcohol into the theater with you?

The bar drinks are basically anything you can think of and are no more expensive than at Clydes. I've seen one show in the VIP theater... leather seats, traytables between them, etc... AWESOME!

I've been to Harry Potter and Immortals in D-Box. D-Box is fantastic. However, the $22 price tag is a bit rough!!!! The seats tilt in all directions and vibrate. The flying scenes in Harry Potter were fantastic and the action in Immortals was great.
Food ranges from panini's to burgers, chicken to salads, and much more... plus your enhanced standard movie fare.
Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
