    Hi All,

We're planning to do some landscaping over the next few weeks and called to have Miss Utility come out and mark our yard. They contacted all of the local utilities, and so far we've had OpenBand, Washington Gas, and Dominion mark the yard. Not surprisingly in our e-mail confirmation, Verizon and Comcast had the message, "No conflict; privately owned utility on property. Contact private utility owner for locate." This clearly makes sense since OpenBand is the only cable/internet provider in Southern Walk. But what DOESN'T make sense is that Loudoun Water had the same message next to their name!

Am I missing something here? Considering we pay a bill to Loudoun Water each quarter, I don't see how they wouldn't have to come out and mark our yard. Has anybody else had this same experience or should I contact them again to see if it was an error? The only other thing I can think of is that somehow the pipes Loudoun Water owns end at the street where the meters are and technically the pipes on our property are privately owned. But if that's the case, who can we get to mark the water lines?

    Thanks!

Maybe a clerical error of some sort? When we had utilities marked last year for the deck on our townhome, Loudoun Water did come out.

i was pleased when they came out and marked our yard---but they were wrong. it could've been ugly when they were digging the hole for our deck post and where they were digging was where the gas line was. Luckily--when the gas line was buried--they mark it with caution tape inches above where the line actually is buried. When they shovel hit the caution tape---they moved over.

I ended up calling Loudoun water to find out what was going on. It turns out that the pipes Loudoun Water owns end at the meters along the curbs. The pipes coming into our yards technically belong to us, so are considered "private" property. They also said the pipes are undiscoverable due to the polyethylene they're made of. Luckily, the gentleman I talked to was able to find documentation of where the sewer and water lines come through our property (and actually sent one of his employees out to drop it off at our house the same day!). I guess I'm just surprised that it's not an easier process since the whole point of calling Miss Utility is to make sure you know where ALL utility lines are.

Oh now that I think about it, I was wrong. Water supply comes in from the street in front of the house, not in the backyard, so I guess Loudoun Water did not come out for our backyard deck, although in our case they didn't need to. Anyway, glad you got it sorted out. :)
