I realize this is a duplicate of T8ergirl's post but I thought (and I hope you agree) that since it is a time sensitive topic with a shelf life (pun intended!) that I'd drop another one to make sure it gets seen.

Please put your full bags of food (use any bag!) out on your front porch tonight or tomorrow morning.

Harris Teeter has buy 2 GET 3 FREE canned veggies right now so run to the store if you need to. Let's fill those empty shelves at the food banks.

Dear Broadlands Families - I'd like to share a note from Pack 1483's Committee Chairman and send a huge THANK YOU for your generosity! ...

    Pack 1483 Scouting Families,

In 2008, our Pack 1483 Scouting for Food collection area donated 5650 lbs of food. In 2009, our collection area donated 5772 lbs of food. Given the economy of 2010, I had very modest expectations. I was just hopeful we would collect over 5000 lbs this year.

Today, we saw some parts of the area donate little as I expected. However, we also saw some families choosing to put all of their 2010 charitable donations into our program and provide entire trunk loads full of food. Fortunately for the needy of Loudoun County, there were many more of the latter than the former.

I am pleased to report that Pack 1483 collected and delivered 7054 lbs (yes, 3.5T) of food to LINK in Sterling. Once again, our truck load of food left the site workers speechless and tired. It took 61 grocery carts to move all the food into the basement of the church to be weighed. The piles of food were being sorted and stacked as we left. I'm afraid they will be there awhile.

In just a few days the food we collected and delivered to LINK will feed over 5000 people here in Loudoun County. A huge thank you to everyone in Pack 1483 who participated. A special thanks to Shawn O'Malley, her team of helpers, and all the den coordinators. Please also pass along a special thank you to all your neighbors who we so generous.

    Yours in Scouting,

    Chris Wheedleton
    Pack 1483 Committee Chair

I think all of the Cub Scout Packs & Boy Scout Troops deserve a big hand! My son's BS Troop was sorting the food brought in by local Cub Scout Packs for Loudoun Interfaith Relief and they sorted 19 tons of food on Saturday.

So who sponsored this event? Or, was it a concerted effort?

Scouting for Food is a concentrated nationwide service project for the Boy Scouts of America with a 50+ year history that occurs the first and second Saturdays of November. All across the USA Scouting does this service project. For the DC metro area, 1700 Boy Scout units across 17 counties in MD/VA/DC with 50,000 Scouts and 21,000 adult volunteers mobilize in conjunction with Safeway (donated 1 million recyclable bags!) and WUSA Channel 9 (donated air time and advertising). Each county has their own volunteer staff and assigns each of the 120+ Scout units representing 3000+ Scouts in Loudoun county an area to cover. Loudoun County Scout units typically raise about 100,000 pounds of the million pound goal DC area Scouting goal. Typically the Cub Scout packs pick up food bags and the Boy Scout Troops and the Order of the Arrow National Scouting Honor Society help sort the collected food at several county wide food distribution centers like LINK and Loudoun Interfaith Relief (Boy Scouts are bigger and stronger and can lift the heavy food boxes that occurs at the food collection sites, etc). But some troops pick up food in areas of Loudoun County as well as serve at the collection centers. Locally, Pack 1483 has covered Broadlands since 1999 when it was formed as Hillside Elementary's Cub Pack. As Pack 1484 formed with Mill Run ES started, they have territories south. Long time residents of our area are very generous to our Scouts and we are very grateful to the community for record amount of giving this year!

National Capital Area Council Scouting Commissioner/Broadlands resident since 1997

    HUZZAH!

And, speaking from experience, those kids run their tails off on collection day!

    Great Job!
