We are currently in the process purging no longer wanted items. We have had some bulk items picked up by Patriot Disposal recently for free. Today, I called to have a old 3x5 deck storage bin picked up and was informed that there would be a $75 pickup fee. ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME?! I was told that the bin is not a standard household item, such as a small piece of furniture or a mattress. I asked if I was getting rid of a king size mattress would there be a fee and was told no. So a bin that easily collapses when crushed, cost a ridiculous amount and a huge mattress is free? I am very perplexed.
I also called a HOA board member friend to let him know about this issue. Please let the HOA know if you experience something similar.

Yes. We are in the process of doing some home renovations. Had some old exercise equipment and futon mattress to toss and would not fit into trash bin. Patriot told me it was 95.00 to pick those items up. Patriot told me that it would be cheaper for me to bring it to the dump myself. It was a lot cheaper and that is what I did.

yeah, it's gotten to the point of rediculousness. If you don't call and schedule a pickup they don't have to take anything that is not in the bin. I had a chair they wanted us to pay a hefty fee for.

Similarly, I had a small dehumidifier they wanted $45 to pick up. I ended up taking it to the County dump. I started making the trip once a month to cart my recyclables such as glass and other things not recyclable through Patriot. There are large bins at the entrance so you do not have to wait in line.

    Crazy, I know. Right?

They didn't even pick up the Moving box (cardboard) one time. And on another time, they took my recycling bin (The large tall one with wheels) and threw it upside down on my driveway littering the road with trash that they didn't throw into the truck!!! I had to call the company and report it. They said "He's not supposed to do that....I said in response, they've been doing that for several weeks now!!!!". Morons. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that you don't throw the tall trash bins upside down with the bin cover open in the driveway. SMDH. I tell ya, Patriot isn't up to snuff anymore. The longer they work for hte association, they know very well that the following year, their contract keeps getting renewed so they don't give a crap what they do as long as they are getting paid. I like to switch up companies for my house as it keeps them on their toes as to whether they'll continue to get business from me. By doing that, they will work a bit harder in an effort to earn my business. If they are sliding downhill a bit, I switch them out at the end of their contract and get another business that will go the extra mile to earn my business with quality services. Some times its neccessary to do that.

In all the years we have used Patriot, I have never seen a trash or recycle bin upside down. Not once anywhere in the community. Just sayin’
It doesn’t even make sense. It would be harder and slow them down more to put a can upside down. And these guys do not want to be slowed down.

Next time, I’ll take a picture for you if you find that hard to believe on Ridgeway Drive-

Trust me, it happened and it didn’t make any sense for them to do it but they did- That’s why I called Patriot to let them know it was happening-

We had 3 shelving units we wanted Patriot to take. They wanted $75 each ($225 total) to take them...

Yeah this is a more recent 'evolution' with them... I guess a nice loophole for them in the contract that they get to set the fees for these items?

They used to be great and would take anything within reason without a fuss.

Then it became 'you have to call for a special pickup....'

Now it's become 'you have to call for a special pickup and pay an egregious fee'

They won't even take stuff in trash bags if it's not in the bin anymore.

I really feel like they are pushing the boundaries just seeing how far they can go.

Asked to have a bin replaced because they had broken the old one so much and it was foul from a decade of use. They replace it with another bin that stinks worse than the first.

The last time I called and setup a special pickup I told them I had a contaminated large box that needed to not be recycled. They confirmed that but the recycling truck still took it. They will only do the special pickup on Thursdays too.

Agree with you on what you've said. I had to call them not once, but three times to GET them to swap out my broken bin with a new one and I had to wash out the "new" one with soap because it smelled as well.

Yeah...I agree they are pushing the boundaries further each year as long as the contract is in force with the HOA and them. I think they are going to continue to do this as long as the HOA puts up with it.

Speaking from experiences on changing out contracts within an HOA, it is a lot of work! Maybe the BHOA could use some volunteers to form a research committee to explore the marketplace for waste services for a community of our size?

And the HOA looks into these things. I do plan to have them explaining their change in policy for picking up large items.
As has been said here, they used to take just about anything, no questions asked. No it seems they want to charge for everything that does not fit in the bin.
And finding a better company? Please let me know if you find one.
Overall, I have been extremely pleased with Patriot.

Overall, IMO Patriot has been great. I did not really mind to much when they started the special pickups as they would still pick up most anything. It is the much more recent charging for most special items now that is frustrating.

Overall, I think Patriot is good - but your comments got me thinking a bit more- I can’t help but wonder if they are charging more now, etc because perhaps Landfill has increased costs or labor costs has gone up or they have a shortage of staff or their processing costs has increased? Just grabbing at thoughts here-

Patriot was great. It all started going downhill with the arm truck and the communication of these "policy" changes has been non existent. You don't find out until your trash they used to take isn't picked up. Then with a call you learn the damage. We're just taking the bulk items to the dump ourselves now which is what I think their ultimate goal is. We are getting much less service than we used to and it's going to lead to more people at the dump which I'm sure the dump doesn't want.

If the HOA is paying the same for this service then something needs to be done. We should have a discount for these changes

Good points and yeah, Im agreeing with you that after the arm truck began, I noticed that more changes were coming. I think Patriot is dealing with price / cost pressures and they are trying to cut costs and automate things (hence the arm truck)--I think they are trying to get us to take crap to the landfill ourselves so their workers don't have to do the heavy lifting, etc and they save $$$ in the long haul. They are trying to increase their revenues more, I would guess.
