An employee with 10+ years tenure is taking on a sales position an established national company in an area where the company has little to no presence. What should be the expected support structure from the company, ie advertising, marketing, etc?... Or is the nature of sales simply to expect the employee to cold call, network, and stir up his own business?

I can comment with no basis to speak from :D. That being said, I would not take that position if the company could not convey the support structure as part of the position offer. Either the company expects the person to fail and thus no support, doesn't expect anything to really happen in that area and thus no support, or isn't a company that takes sales seriously and thus no support.

No good can come from taking a sales position in a new area with no corporate support. Seems the employee is the only one with skin in the game,,,,,,
