I guess I would have said that I can't shovel the snow that's in the driveway (i presume that's why you said you would have had to wait) and I need to go somewhere and ask if he could move it for me.

    County of Loudoun News Release

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    February 19, 2010
Loudoun County Officials Call for Compliance with Snow Removal Ordinance
Loudoun County zoning officials are calling on residents to comply with the county ordinance that calls for snow and ice to be removed from sidewalks after a snowfall.

“Chapter 1022 of the Loudoun County Codified Ordinances requires that snow and ice be removed from sidewalks that are adjacent to publicly maintained streets,” said Keith Fairfax, Loudoun’s Zoning Enforcement Manager. The ordinance, which applies to areas outside the county’s incorporated towns, generally calls for snow and ice to be removed within six hours after a storm has ended.

Fairfax says in the wake of the recent record snowfall, the county has gotten an increasing number of complaints about property owners who have not cleared their walkways. “We’re really not asking for complaints. We’re asking for compliance with the snow removal ordinance so we can avoid aggressive enforcement actions, which would include taking people to court,” Fairfax said. The ordinance calls for violators to face a fine of up to $250 a day.

Fairfax says if Loudoun residents do have a complaint, they may fill out a zoning violation form which is available online at www.loudoun.gov/zoning.

I like it, owners with snow blowers and healthy backs can start at the Claiborne end of Vestals Gap (or their street) and work their way back -- we could start do this tomorrow or Sunday.

Bringing up a dead horse again - the residents of the house at the corner of Kitchen Prim & Glebe View has yet again not shoveled their sidewalks one iota. I attempted to contact them with no response. Will be calling the county. Perhaps that might get them to start fulfilling their responsibilities as a property owner.

I assume you have knocked on their door and offered to help?

Knocked on the door - no answer. Last year when I knocked on the door I received a litany of excuses and was told to have my husband shovel their driveway. This house NEVER shovels. They have the bus stop there and are responsible for the sidewalks. If you don't want to shovel the sidewalks, don't buy a house with sidewalks or on the corner where you have more of them.

Contact the county. They will send them a letter reminding them of their responsibility and of a fine of $250 for each day it is not shoveled.
    Usually gets good results.

In that case, I would agree with Cliff.

In this case, I'm not sure the county would have any effect. I think this house may be a victim of the economy.

Are they ill, disabled or handicapped? I would think that would be one of the only valid reasons not to shovel?

I doubt it this has been an ongoing issue for years! You know the attitude - you can't make me do it if I don't want to. Well the other homeowners and the HOA may not but the county sure can make it a very painful thing not to do!

It's being done now. I saw somebody with a snow blower there a few minutes ago.

Drove by that house last night and it was completely dark and no lamppost lit either. Total dark corner. Perhaps it is vacant and reason for no shoveling?

Don't know what the issue is with this property but the new owners didn't clear this past time either. They shoveled in front of the house but not on the side which was a sheet of ice yesterday morning.

A reminder to all who live on corners: you are responsible for both sets of sidewalks should you have them, not just the one in front of your house and your driveway.

Wouldn't this be considered "easy money" for the County? Just drive around the day after it snowed and hand out citations?
