'Tis the season to get fat!

Did you know the average American gains between 7 and 10 pounds over the Holiday season? Not only that, but it is gained within a span of only 3 months, whereas it takes upwards of 5-6 months for many of these individuals to lose that same amount in body fat.

Too many Americans think they can diet, drop the weight and everything is fine - WRONG! Dieting alone will not keep the weight off. Ask anyone who has ever tried a diet how many times they have tried to lose weight and failed. Even those that seem to keep most of the weight off after a year or so tend to eventually gain it back - especially if they are not exercising or being efficient in what they are doing.

This is why I have arranged a special offer through your HOA

well even better, live in a place where you don't get invited to holiday parties! Being a former giver, and having now recprocation for years, we gave up! Of course, hosting the Dec HH is different.

    Dear Brassy@39,

ABSOLUTELY!!! As often as you can eat fresh, whole, natural, unprocessed, unaltered foods without preservatives or artificial ingredients - the better you will feel. Think of your body like a high-performance sports car. If you put dirty oil and bad gas in the tank, it wouldn't run as well as if it had fresh high octane racing fuel and clean engine oil to lube the pistons and gears.

But listen, I know we all live in a society of convenience. It seems everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere and they never have time for anything. That's why it's even more important to plan meals, pack our lunch and snacks in a cooler (or research the contents of the foods we choose when we eat out). In some cases it requires finding convenient, but natural and healthy, meal replacements for those times when we are stuck at work or on the run. There are companies such as Let's Dish that helps you put together better meals for your family or fresh food delivery places such as Meals to Go or Purfoods that can help those with ridiculously busy lives. There are so many options for people other than fast-food, chain restaurants, or skipping meals all together.

Most importantly we must make good choices every single day. We must choose the healthy selections, we must ask for our foods to be prepared in special ways, and we must make what we eat, good for us and supportive of the goals we have in terms of our body image and health and fitness level.

I guarantee that if a person chooses to eat proper portions of healthy, fresh meat, fruits and vegetables for 21 days, they will not only feel better but they will also avoid many of the bad food cravings they once had.

Remember, if you do it right, it doesn't cost any more to select healthy foods at the grocery store. It doesn't take any more time to prepare healthy meals than it does to order take-out and you can learn to plan a week's menu for your entire family so that everyone can benefit.

As a nutritionist, it has always been my goal to help people make better choices. For some, it may require just making a small change such as avoiding alcohol or sodas - perhaps cutting down on sodium or sugar - or simply adding more fresh fruits and veggies into their day. Sometimes, even people who think they are eating healthy can use some advice and pointers - even fresh recipes or ideas.

If anyone reading this reply needs professional support, either with nutrition, metabolism, or exercise, please feel free to contact me directly at the number or web site below. Fitness Together is now entering our 3rd year here in Loudoun County and we've personally helped over 300 men and women achieve better health and fitness. I would be more than happy to speak with you on the phone or schedule an appointment to discuss your fitness and nutrition goals.

Week 4 is now in the record books as the most fun anyone could possibly have with a broom! This Sunday's challenge again brought us to Dulles Sportsplex with 16 participants and their assortment of sweeping equipment.

The bristles flew and several brooms were broken, but at the end of the team challenge, everyone had a great time and it was really fun to see everyone's competitive spirits come alive!
