One thing to think of with laptops is that even though you have secured your wireless, there may be an access point in the neighborhood that is not secured.

My nephew has figured this out, and even purchased special antennas to compensate.

The bottom line is that every monitoring system is designed to be circumvented (at least from the teen perspective), so do not rely solely on technology.

We banned addictinggames.com from our house. My son's friend introduced him to it and so I got to see the wonderful Keep Katie Happy, which depicts a woman giving birth and if you don't catch all the pain pills that are falling, she shows greater and greater pain. Isn't that charming?

My son protested that there were lots of fun games there for FREE, so I had him show me a couple more. When he struck out the second and third time with equally cruel and disturbing games, we agreed that the whole site would no longer be allowed at our house. There is so much out there that's nice and fun for kids; that site is disgusting.

this MAY be the site that had promo pop ups on it a year or so ago that prompted our internet restrictions in our home.

I never saw any porn on that site. I know that at least three of my son's friends have asked to play on that site at our house and been told N. O.

The porno pop-up may have been loaded by someone visiting another site and only triggered by the game site.

How about unplugging the router and putting it in your bedroom at 10 so your son can not go online? You already said your son is a tech savvy one so he will find a way to get around those online security you might install. The best thing to do is to get the hardware (modem or router) so he really can not go online unless you have some neighbors broadcasting their wifi signal unsecured then he can go online through his laptop.

That's actually not a bad site. I play a ton of games (Risk, Bubbles, etc...) there that are not vulgar, violent or disgusting (I do, from time to time, play some of those). I realize it may be hard (or impossible) to restrict what games can or can not be played. I don't recall any pop ups and if there were any, they certainly weren't porn.

Unfortunately, you can almost always find an unsecured network to connect to around here.

Thanks for all of your advice! With the help of a very Tech Savvy friend (thanks Mr. Linux)! We got the wireless router secured and put parental controls and hour limits on the system. It now gives a message to our kids that says, "Dad will not allow you to visit this site!" We also enforce the rules of no laptops in the bedrooms and it has to be docked at the desk in my office by 10PM or else it is taken away for a determined amount of time.
