Lost in all these great points is a simple one: if our federal, state and local governments didn't over-extend themselves trying to be the nanny state and wasting billions of dollars, we wouldn't be paying nearly as much in taxes to begin with.

I have this outdated notion that individuals and families can better decide how and where to spend their own money than the government.

And where will we be in regards to future taxes if the Democrats take the White House????

Well, they would move towards ending the occupation in the Middle East, which lowers the tax liability for all Americans.

In a basic sense, your argument is almost saying that the mere existence of taxes makes a country socialist. While, to be clear, you did not say that specifically, it is an uncercurrent in your post. If that is what you are saying, I agree on a certain plane. Any tax, by its very nature, is a "wealth transfer." However, that would make the U.S. the largest socialist country in the world since our tax base is the biggest.

I agree with the second statement, but not the first. The tax just needs to be painful enough to make people think. If each cigarette had a total cost of $5.00 (for a single cigarette!), then far fewer people would light up.

Doubt it, they will probably RAISE taxes to lower the national debt. At best, taxes will remain the same.

Then we lose that significant tax and politicians come up with something else to tax. Something that may actually impact everyone instead of just smokers.

No, that's not what I'm saying.

What I was saying is that it is common in European Socalist states that high taxes are commonly accepted and extremely high taxes are often used to influence behavior.... such as choice of cars.

I said nothing of the sort that taxes makes one Socialist - just that taxes are a common trait. Stop trying to introduce some cause and effect there.

No again - because of your flawed assumption that taxing infers socalism. It's more what is DONE with the taxes then how much you collect, and how income is distributed. Nothing to do with how much tax revenue you take in.

In theory - but that is where the ideals of government here in America differ from other countries. Freedom vs government control, etc.

Probably doesn't matter what the government did with the money, people here would probably never accept a 40% tax across the board, etc. Its big government vs little government - way before you get to ideals about how the money is spent. Be it on health services or on building nukes.

You keep criticizing Europe broadly, but how is it that the U.S. is that much different? For example, the U.S. Government imposes a "gas guzzler" tax on vehicles to - and I quote you - "fluence behavior.... such as choice of cars" just as you are accusing them of doing.

I sense in your posts a level of seething vitriol for Europe. In fact, you've mentioned oil-rich Norway a few times (you have sniped about Norway in three different threads, based on my quick search). Now, I say this with tongue in cheek, it almost seems like a right-wing campaign against a sovereign oil-rich country with a form of government that they disapprove of. What's next? Invasion and occupation of Scandinavia?

You can't see the difference between a $1,000 one time luxury tax vs. nearly $100,000 dollars in duties and taxes? Plus gas taxes that are 10x higher then here.. plus nearly every other aspect of owning a car as well (insurance, etc). There isn't even a comparison here. The way they influence behavior is night and day. The US is taxing to collect on the usage.. and only marginally trying to influence behavior. Compared to other countries which put muscle behind the motive by charging amounts that people can not ignore.

Give it up with your conspiracies and other BS. I mention Norway because I WORK THERE and travel there numerous times a year - hence I'm familiar with the situation. Plus I work closely with many people from other parts of the UK and continential Europe, so I'm exposed to life in their homes as well. Not just what the 'media' or other spin-doctors like yourself try to 'educate' people with.

I know its a hard concept for you to grasp.. but some of us post about what we have EXPERIENCE with.. not just what you like to rant about.

There's a quote from Winston Churchill that talks to this, "Now we are simply haggling about the price." You admit that we have the concept in the U.S., but discard it because the monetary value is different. Wow, I guess that there are still people out there who believe that you can be a little pregnant!

Also, I am not sure why you have started to throw around the term "luxury tax." I did not mention any "luxury tax." I was talking about the "gas guzzler tax." Why are you trying to confuse things?

Why do you work there if you hate it so much? By working there, aren't you supporting a socialist country that you continually denigrate?

I have lived in Europe, and I have friends there. They don't whine and complain about their lives nearly as much as you are doing on their behalf. In fact, they are shocked that a country as advanced and wealthy as the U.S. would find it morally and ethically acceptable to force a child to go without cancer access to treatments that could save her life (remember what the administration recently did).

If you can't see the difference in impact in asking someone for $1 vs asking them for $1000 dollars - there there is no point in continuing. You're setting up strawmen just for your amusement.

It was a keyboard slip - but it doesn't change the underlying topic - so try again.

Who said I hate it? I simply drew a comparison of your 'ideals' to countries that already operate that way. As you can see, 300 million people here chose not to live that way. If you want to have that, then I recommend you move back to Europe. Their political ideals seem much more inline. I suggest France for you.

If you can't see how the concepts are the same and only the value amounts are different, then I think you are ignoring facts to serve your own viewpoint. Again, you can't be a little bit pregnant, CORRECT? I'm calling for some intellectual honesty like Churchill called for in the quote I mentioned.

On my keyboard, the letters "gas guzzler" and "luxury tax" are not anywhere near each other. Dude, I'd love to see your keyboard - is it something new from Bill Gates? You tried to change the subject, but it did not work.

My ideals, huh? I don't recall mentioning my ideals in this discussion. I sense another attempt to change the subject like you did with "luxury tax."

What way? You mean untaxed and free from government oversight and regulation? Dude, wake up. Almost every aspect of our lives is managed by government.

Whatever... you do this for attention. I'm not giving it to you. These absurd strawman arguments are not even worth it.

The old British expression "In for a penny, in for a pound" must mean nothing to you. You disparage Europeans for what being what you call "socialists." You base the labeling of them as "socialists" on the fact that some European countries have taxes that are "used to influence behavior.... such as choice of cars." However, when someone points out that we have exactly such a tax in this country, you dance like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Now, let me see if cafepress has a "I'm a little bit pregnant" bumpersticker for you.
