Due to inclement weather and poor road conditions, all scheduled services for today (1/3/22) have been suspended. Trash & recycling services will resume on Thursday. Any overflow or accumulation will be collected when Patriot returns.

Patriot continues to disappoint. No tree pickup, no recycling pickup. At least they picked up the trash that was overflowing from everyone's containers. 1 for 3.

Today is 1/6/22 and the time is 6:00 pm. At what time do we conclude recycling will not be picked up today?

Or maybe many of their workers quit because they found better paying jobs elsewhere-

I’m wondering if our trash contract costs were higher for 2022 and if so, I would expect better service for the price the HOA pays. They probably got overwhelmed with the fact Monday’s services was cancelled. They should have planned to put more trucks and perhaps got temp people to help out to get this under control- I’m sure they probably had to pay OT today if the workers had to work more than 8 hrs to get all the recycling done if they came after 6 pm to get recycling done-

Its hard to be sympathetic when workers quit for higher pay elsewhere and/or poor planning of resources after not picking up on Monday- they could have come on tues or Wed so but nooooo… they just cancel and go on Thurs so it’s down from 2 to 1 day- no make up days??? Didn’t we pay for two days a week?

not trying to argue but as someone who works in Corporate Finance, if an organization negotiates a contract that spells out 2 days a week pickup and then they only come one day, it’s hard to feel sorry if they don’t meet the requirements/goals that were agreed to in any contract. My company’s clients are tough with us if we don’t meet their expectations or we don’t deliver per schedule they have agreed with us- our clients don’t give us a break nor do they give us empathy- it’s business!

I manage several dozens of subcontractors and I have contracts with them that spells out what goals/requirements they must adhere to- I sometimes get requests to delay things due to someone being sick and I have to decline it because contract does not give them any breaks just our clients hold us to their contract with us. I can’t just let it go with one subcontractor because if I do then others are going to want the same break- we have a firm schedule to follow so while I feel sorry they have someone sick, they still need to fulfill the contract.

Our HOA has given us a schedule for residents to pay their HOA dues and it’s due by x date- I doubt they will give all of us a break if a check writer is sick or the bank had a problem with their system. HOA expects us to comply with their contract rules- If they don’t receive the funds by x date, we get dinged by them- simple as that.

I’m sure we don’t get a refund for a missed trash pickup day so it’s hard to be empathetic when we haven’t gotten our trash picked up.

I could go on about showing VA officials empathy when I95 was shut down leaving hundreds if not thousands of drivers stranded but I won’t go there—-

since I asked the question about time, they did pick up my recycling today after 6pm. I asked too soon.

After weather cancelled a pickup day after the holiday season, when trash cans are full, trees are at curb, etc., they were out on the following pick up day from 6:30am until after 7pm to catch up. Those lazy bums…..fire them all and get a new company!!! There are obviously better trash companies out there that are cheaper, faster, with extra employees and trucks to spare!!
    What a dumb HOA!!!

    sarcasm off.

Capricorn, your recent postings and multiple complaints regarding Patriot's service are obvious. I would suggest that instead of posting your grievances in these forums, that you attend a HOA Board Meeting and speak directly to the Board who can address your concerns in a timely matter. You seem to make a lot of assumptions regarding a lot of things that you then post here as being 'facts'.

I understand that sometimes it 'feels good' to be able to vent in an anonymous way, but if you have issues that you really want addressed, and questions or concerns, please attend a HOA meeting. Otherwise, you run the risk of making factually inaccurate statements that don't help the situation and run the risk of confusing residents. If you prefer to simply rant and vent here on the forums anonymously, then that is your prerogative and right, but if you truly want to discuss and address your issues and concerns, and/or get questions answered so you can be better informed before making assumptions, I strongly urge you to attend a meeting.

Are there actually? I think I read in the BHOA newsletter that we recently did market research and/or re-competed this contract. Am I wrong?

Sarcasm can be taken as dismissive, especially when it comes from those in authority. Not to discount the hard work of the BHOA Board. These are volunteer positions and many have done this for a decade or more. I would hope that if Cap approaches the BHOA with the concern that a serious response would be stated back. Something along the lines of "we are understanding of your question and concern. The BHOA recently floated out a contract to industry to invite open competition and the responses we received did not convince us to replace the current contract. If you are willing to serve in the community we invite you to work with our Board to help us track performance and measure cost impacts of outages and pursue research into other solutions to supplement current services and provide a level of redundancy on days when trash and recycling collection efforts fail to meet basic performance measures specified in contracted services".... remember Cap has a finance background and manages contracts. I wasn't being sarcastic when I tried to make a plea to serve. This is an opportunity to help.

    Excelsior-
I’ll be more clear. I think Patriot does an outstanding job and have been for years. I strongly supported keeping them as our trash contractor.
As most everyone knows, and has been pointed out in other threads, businesses of all types are having trouble finding employees to work and have been closing with no notice on many occasions.
I imagine even the glamorous and highly sought after trash emptying positions may be suffering as well ( there’s that sarcasm again).
It is not only unreasonable but ludicrous to think that when we had a snow event Monday, that Patriot could hire new temp employees, train them, and have them out driving trucks before Thursday’s scheduled pick up as was suggested.
The fact that their people worked very long hours the next pick up day to get things done was a good thing.
I have no problem with the service we receive and the amount we pay for it.
I have had many email exchanges and phone conversations with Cap about this and other issues. He knows how to get answers, and quickly, if he needs to.

Ok, thanks. It sounds like there is no other corporate entity that can perform services that our community needs any better than whom we've already contracted with. I am also of the belief that the current labor situation in this country is completely unprecedented and I have empathy for our trash contractor. Back before COVID, I never had not one complaint... ever.. about trash services. I'm hopeful that Cap re-considers his concern and puts it in perspective. These are trash removal services and the work is performed outdoors in the cold and the pay and benefits are probably not amongst the most well compensated in the services sector of the economy. Perhaps a position on an HOA Board in dealing with contracts for residential services for things like trash, pool, landscaping, snow plowing/removal, and professional management staff, at the scale we operate at, will help understanding that there are limits to the levels of expectations.

You are correct. And the HOA has experienced those limits in many ways, most noticeably the limitations to our pools the past two years.

We actually have multiple Board members with direct experience dealing with such contracts. Our HOA General Manager is also extremely knowledgeable in this area, as are some of our HOA staff.
