    Meeting Jun 28, 2022 06:00 PM

Proposed Traffic Calming Committee Seeking Volunteers The Loudoun County Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure (DTCI) performed engineering studies on Chickacoan Trail Drive, Demott Drive, Glebe View Drive, Ridgeway Drive, and Village Drive. Traffic and speed data on all but Village Drive met the qualifications to develop conceptual plans for traffic calming measures. We are looking for residents in the affected areas interested promoting traffic calming to review the information and help distribute information to all affected owners…read more for details and zoom meeting link>>

I’ve been observing the traffic flow on Ridgeeay and found that SOME drivers that are either going up the hill past Stone Hollow Road or going to/from Village of Waxpool are often the speeders on Ridgeway Drive. I had observed a female going at a very high rate of speed on the road before making a right into village of waxpool communoty- I was looking at her and shaking my head and she barely even slowed down one bit- I fear some kid(s) in our community will get hit one day- not a matter of how or who but WHEN.
I’m glad that the county/state is finally doing something constructive about it.

Please note, they can only implement the traffic calming measures if they obtain more than 50% support from each of the areas. This is why residents involvement is needed to educate and reach out to your neighbors to complete the survey, expected to be distributed this fall. If the required 50% support is not received, the measures cannot be implemented.

Meaning HALF of the residents must be in support of it?

I believe that probably is too high of a bar to meet- so most likely this isn’t going to happen then- guess all this talk of implementing traffic calming measures is all for nothing then.

Speeding, etc is going to continue unabated until an accident or a kid gets hit. Not enough deputies out in Broadlands to even make a dent with speeders.

50% of the affected property owners on that particular street, surrounding streets, community wide? Just curious what the variables are. Have any traffic calming measures been implemented up to now; 25 mph signage, increased traffic cop presence, flashing warning signs, etc.?

If you open the Traffic Calming Info, page 34-35 show the areas as they are broken down. The presentation explains how it all works.

Hopefully after the overturned vehicle on Ridgeway Drive just past Engleside on Sunday something will happen. I can only imagine how fast that car must have been going to strike a parked car and flip over.

Getting the traffic calming measures implemented will require a lot of community involvement. We hope that many members attend the upcoming meeting and can help contact and educate their neighbors so that they respond to the survey when the time comes. More than 50% written support for each area is required for the proposed measures to be implemented. This will likely involve a volunteer door to door campaign to rally support.

100 percent against any action to install speed bumps without more enforcement by officers looking for speeders, loud cars, texters, bass thumpers, racers on Claiborne. These measures are like putting forward a minor suppressive countermeasure that will likely do very little.

So, don’t do anything to try and slow down traffic on Ridgeway because the sheriff’s department doesn’t patrol Claiborne to your liking?
    Not seeing the connection.

I have been living in Broadlands for 25 years, and walk two dogs in our neighborhood, several times every day. I have also successfully raised three children in our neighborhood without any of them ever complaining of almost being hit by a vehicle in our neighborhood. In my experience 99 percent of the drivers operate at a safe speed in our neighborhood whereas 1 percent drive recklessly fast. The crazy speeders can usually be found driving in our neighborhood , at sometimes twice the posted speeds, on Friday and Saturday nights after 9 pm.
The problem with speed bumps is they penalize the 99 percent of residents who obey the speed limit as these bumps, over time, cause damage to residents vehicles. A smarter solution is to pressure Sheriff Chapman, who has shown himself to be responsive to reasonable requests, to have officers run radar traps in our neighborhood on Friday and Saturday nights for a couple of months, and then on a random basis thereafter. I guarantee they would write several reckless driving citations each night and would successfully ticket many of the scofflaws, who I bet are newer teenage drivers and residents of Ashburn. Word would quickly get out amongst this population to avoid speeding in the Broadlands and this problem would go away.

I am all for a fully combined effort for traffic calming in Broadlands. Claiborne is now a major North/South transportation artery in Loudoun County that bisects Broadlands. Try living with a home backing up to it, I feel like I live at a speedway. It is very disturbing and affects enjoyment of the home. Many of these racers are Broadlands residents. Claiborne is the bigger concern, the road is very dangerous. A few weeks ago someone was killed. Anyone try to relax at SW pool yet and notice the noise from the souped up cars? If LCSO does any calming they should start on Claiborne.

    BDLNDLVR-
The speed humps are not the same as speed bumps. You can drive over the humps at 25 mph with no problem. The speed bumps are the ones that jar you at even 10mph.
We would get the humps, not the bumps.

    BDLNDLVR-

Its more like 5-10% of the drivers speed on Ridgeway (and many do during the daytime as my home office faces the road so I can see them race by) and I support the use of humps because we do have kids skateboarding, riding bikes, driving toy cars, joggers and other on the roads- Deputies are rarely in our neighborhood to enforce the regulations.

I’ve been told that Loudoun does not have enough Deputies to be sent to all neighborhoods throughout Loudoun County to catch speeders as Loudoun is still growing significantly as we have more traffic / roads than 5-10 yrs ago. I’m noticing it’s taking them longer to come to our neighborhood nowadays than years ago - they are dealing with more pressing issues nowadays than to try to catch some speeders in numerous neighborhoods throughout.

What’s more, they will sit in the community for a very short while before they are called away for a more serious event. A few yrs ago, a Deputy was sitting across my house waiting for “speeders” — he left after only 10 mins- not even long enough to catch speeders! He was needed elsewhere. Humps don’t go anywhere but on the spot where they are installed. Simple.

Humps will be around for a long time to help keep speeders at bay (except for the larger trucks that are capable of speeding over the humps without issues). We’ve already had a car overturn on Ridgeway and don’t need more of that! Hence, my support for humps on Ridgeway.

I'd say the numbers are much higher than that up at the top of the hill on Ridgeway. Probably more like 30%. On top of the speeding people cut corners like it's the Indy 500. Feels like almost daily someone nearly hits my car when I'm stopped at the stop sign and they are cutting that corner. Then there are the stop signs... I guess they don't exist to 90% of the people. Seeing someone stop is extremely rare. I've also had people pass me on ridgeway because I was going 25mph in front of the school. It's definitely worse now that the college kids are returning but it's just as often the parents.

As a reminder, please join us for this virtual meeting tonight. We will review the traffic study, the proposed traffic calming measures, and the community feedback that is necessary to implement them.

Agree - Claiborne is a bigger problem. I anticipated problems when they increased the speed to 45mph with only 8/10 a mile between the Claiborne/Waxpool intersection and Broadlands Blvd.

Yesterday, a car was barrelling down at a high speed down Stone Hollow Road....I estimate it was probably going around 40MPH. Will you please SLOW the EFF down? The road is full of cars parked at the curb and the road is made more narrow as a result and for the rest of us, we don't appreciate speeding down that road ...plus there are signs that say limit the speed to 25 MPH *MAX*. So take that bleeping foot off the pedal and SLOW the bleep down!

If you have a need to speed....head on down to Daytona or Richmond Speedway....Im sure they'll accept your registration to race there.
