I have two different PCs, 3 different DVD burners. After the last round of Windows breakage..... I mean patching, NONE of the DVD burners want to burn from any program, the autostart function works occasionally and I usually have to have Disk Mangler up & running to get any functionality out of the drives at all.

I have re-installed all the drives, one of the DVD burners is brand new (installed today). I am about to take the last step & physically uninstall the fool things, rip out the drives, crash through the registry restart the PC and then re-install everything to see what happens.

    Anyone else having this issue?

Lotsa possibilities. One of them could be Starforce, a copy protection scheme that has documented cases of disabling burners. They are other annoyingly cool disabling "useful copy protection" schemes out there, but this one has gotten the most press.

I would recommend buying an external drive, backing things off, and reloading windows if the driver uninstaller fails. The time your going to spend hunting down 1 million + features in Windows will be more than the time you invest in a clean install. If you have an immediate need to get the burners up and working, you could always try one of the bootable linux CDs for use.

This is one of the major reasons I have said goodbye to Windows. Too many people protecting me from myself for my tastes.

I had this problem with my home PC a year or so ago. Ended up being Roxio Easy CD Creator. Removed that and it began working fine again (with Nero).

Roxio - well, now THERE's a suspect as I have it on BOTH PCs! I'll check that out Poste Haste!

    OK, after lawn mowing.

Yep! Bright yellow Honda Magna with saddle bags. The bike - not me.

Yep! That was it. removed that program, re-installed my Sony Handicam software and all is right with the world.

    Thanks!

FWIW ... Roxio is pretty good at getting out fixes after M$ breaks something ... :shakehead:

Have you tried updating the drive firmware for each DVD drive? I had this happen before too and that fixed the problem. Most manufacturers will have updated firmware and instructions for installing them. However, I would recommend following the instructions closely as there is a high chance to really mess things up.

Yeah - but it was removing Roxio that fixed everything. Makes sense when you realiz that Roxio used to be Adaptec E-Z Coaster Creator!
