Broadband over your electric power? Seems impossible? Well it's being done in several places and could come here in the next few years. The city of Masassas, in fact, hopes to launch it this year.

"Power line communication's first battleground looks to be Manassas, Va. The city already has a fiber-optic network in place, built in 1995 with the aim of luring Internet service providers to hook up citizens with low-cost Internet. Antonella Miller is one of the 15 residents testing the system since May. She says speeds are comparable with those of her outage-prone Comcast cable modem, and faster than the DSL hookup at her job. "If offered, we would go for it, but we wouldn't want to pay more than $40 a month," she says."
