    Hi-
A high speed wireless internet service provider (I think it is VeroLan) just installed a repeater on my neighbor's roof. We live on Basil Ct., which is along a ridge that overlooks all of north Broadlands. This should increase the quality of service for the customers in the community.

It looks like Verolan has been operational for just over a month. Anyone out there care to provide a quick review of their service/support? Reading the posts gives one a somewhat negative view, however, I guess if you had no problems, you would not be posting. Anyone who cancelled care to give an exit review?

I love it. For the last month or so it's been rock solid for me. Pings have stayed 17-25ms to www.yahoo.com even during peak times. Speed is maxxed for my plan. I'm running a home webserver over the link with no problems either. VPN works great when I work at home, as does gaming.

Dont be swayed by the people who have not had perfect results (myself included). I think anyone who has worked with Khalil and his team will agree that they will do their best to make you happy and get things working right. This I can promise. Eventhough a couple others and myself have Line of sight issues, this should not detract from their dedication to you. My connection was working perfectly for about a week and I loved it. It was perfect. But after that week, it has never been the same. I know that they are putting in repeater stations in the area to eliminate the problems that some are facing, I just couldnt wait any longer, I had to have a stable connection so I had to cancel.
Give them a call and let them do a site survey, I think you'll be happy with the connection.

Has anyone experienced high latency problems since Friday? I am currently having line of site issues, but for the most part, I was able to pull about 920 down consistently. As of this past Friday, I have not been able to use the service. It then cleared up Sat. afternoon. Then spotty on Sunday, then total outage this evening. I spoke to Khalil this morning, and it seems they experience some bandwidth issues Fri thru Sat., but I am not sure of the details.

I was just curious for those who have direct line of site, did you experience latency or packet loss between Fri and tonight?

    Thanks,
    D.

dworth- I know he had some problems with the repeater up on Glebe View Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. That affected us folks down here in the lowlands. Since then, my connection has been fine. The only thing I can see that could be causing some packet loss is all the hot air that's been coming from the Broadlands Hospital thread.

hmmmm - Not sure if that would effect me or not. However, this morning my connection once again is experiencing high packet loss. Seems like my ping times shoot up, > 30% packet loss, during peak and then come down over night. Then it picked up again around 7:30. So now I am getting a range of 35 to 100 % packet loss. :(

This is getting frustrating to me because I rely on this connection for work use. Recently I have been resorting to dialup to get online. The staff at verolan has been great, but the cost and the lack of service is killing me. I am trying to stick it out, but it is getting to that point for me.

I had a problem the week before the repeater went down where I was experiencing "surges" in bandwidth. Ping tests showed 5-10 "timed outs" in a row then a succession of normal pings, then nothing again. Khalil came out and found out the bridge had condensation in it...he literally heard water inside the casing when he shook it. Replaced the bridge and everything was ok. He has ordered new casings for these bridges which should solve the condensation problem permanently.

Interesting. I just had my house converted into a repeater station. Had a new bridge installed. The old bridge was filled with water. Don't think that is my problem. The coversion happened about 2 weeks ago.

Im having the same problem since Saturday. I didnt log on Friday so do not know about that day. I too get a lot of packet loss and bandwidth limitations. I just had my bridge replaced due to standing water in it, about 3 weeks ago. It has not rained until today so I dont really think water is the problem here. Either the tower antennaes have been moved or we are looking at bandwidth issues. I dont see bottlenecks on traceroutes to my house from a different ISP, however, when I ping the router I get a lot of latency. For a router not maxed out w/ routing for 1 or 2 Ts, the replies should not be 40-in the 100's. May be cpu load on router for whatever reason. I dont know.
I sent him an email sunday evening to see if he can look into the problem and I have not heard back from him. Let us know if you hear anything.

How has your serive been now? I spoke with Khalil, he thinks the problem was uploads to tower somehow. I had forgotten about a bittorrent download I started for a game demo and left it running. It saturated my upload for a couple days. At first I thought it was Kazaa or something, but it was BT. Anyhow I killed it and he said things were back to normal. That was on Saturday I think. I don't see how it could have affected the tower because Khalil told me it was a repeater connecting to the tower that was having problems. Beyond that, me using my upload should only affect me - so who knows.

Is everyone back to pre-fri? I seem to be still effected. Out since Fri, with small pockets of low usage. I wouldn't think your upload would not effect us either. We should all be capped at the speeds we are subscribing to. Khalil did tell me that bandwidth was maxed out fri and sat, but was still looking into why. It seems to have continued for me throught today. Last night and this morning I was getting 100% packet loss. 5 day outage for me now. :(

Then it's definately not me that was the problem (didn't think my upload would effect a repeater connected to the tower). My pings are normal this morning (18ms to yahoo and no loss).

I'll give Khalil a call later today and see if I can get any more information.

I spoke to Khalil. It looks like my problem maybe more signal noise from other wireless networks. So he is gonna try some things on my end. Keep in mind my problem, with the exception of the Fri/Sat outage is different. I am in Sterling pointing to the Ashburn tower. I just was just curious as to the performance others were getting.

I hope the more powerful amp works. Cause if it doesn't, then looks like I will have to pack it up and go Adelphia.

What kind of antenna is Khalil using for your connection? A square patch antenna? Or a more directional antenna? If the former, ask him about using a more directional antenna instead like a Vagi antenna http://www.pacwireless.com/html/vagi_series.html

It is a directional on a mast. There must be a lot of new noise in my area. I had the service starting in July. I was fine until about 4 weeks ago. Then Khalil added an amp. Then again I was fine until this past Fri. That was even with a dish re-alignment. It is like someone keeps adding an amp on their end. I hope I can get this worked out.

    dworth,
I do not think its isolated to you. I am still having problems. Here is a snapshot just a few minutes ago. It was so bad a few minutes ago, I couldnt even use it.
    http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest...f8ae3cd3dacd;2.0;nyc.speakeasy.net/1066254565

My bandwidth should be 1024/512. I find my bandwidth will drop down to less than 100 and that is when times and packet loss get ridiculous.

Anyone having problems with Verolans service tonight (Sat 10-25)? All of a sudden I'm getting super slow speeds. I can't upload anything, DSLReports speed test times out.

Yeah, downloads are ok, but the upload speeds are slow....

    2003-10-25 21:55:29 EST: 701 / 51
Your download speed : 701314 bps, or 701 kbps.
    A 85.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 51820 bps, or 51 kbps.
Your upstream result was very slow! .. not good
