Actually we did poll the residents (about 2 years ago...) The results were all over pretty much. We got over 300 responses, some said they wanted anything, others said they wanted the fastest out even if it costs a lot. I doubt we'll do another polling, but it was very interesting at the time.

And two years ago we didn't have ANY affordable broadband options - Adelphia did not have 2-way cable modem service in our area. Don't you want to see if our residents needs have changed since high-speed internet is now widely available throughout all of the Broadlands for low cost?

It would also be useful to know how many residents want more out of their current connection (like the ability to run a web server on port 80 in their house or other "guaranteed bandwidth" needs.)

Do we have any other metrics on the Internet needs of our residents?

Well for the low cost, there is always room for improvement. How is Adelphia going to respond to Verizons recent 1.5/128 for $35/mo DSL? With their monopoly here I would guess not a thing. If Verizon suddenly installed remote DSL boxes in Ashburn and advertised 1.5/128 for $35/mo with user install and only a $13 activation how many Adelphia users would switch? I'd switch in an instant. Plus if you have local/long distance package with Verizon you could get that down to $29.95/mo. Anyhow, now we're simply looking for competetion - better services and prices.

As for the broadband polling it was a lot of work. Putting the form together, setting up the database, reports, writing all the questions, etc took quite a few meetings. We're all volunteers here and we don't have many members. And right now, the technology committee is focusing efforts on other projects like our monthly seminars, supporting the HOA events like the free photos at the community center Easter egg hunt and reworking our website among other items. Unless there is just some huge need for it, we have no plans on doing another poll.
